High jumper, Wellington, 1907

Image
High jumper, Wellington, 1907

This man is competing in the high jump at the Wellington amateur athletic sports championships in 1907. He is using the jumping technique prevalent at the time – the 'Fosbury flop' (jumping backwards over the bar) that modern athletes use was only taken up in the late 1960s. The first amateur athletics clubs in New Zealand were formed in Dunedin and Timaru in 1871.
