Story: Māori housing – te noho whare

Following the Second World War many more Māori, especially young adults, moved from rural areas to cities. To keep new arrivals safe, the state and other organisations opened Māori hostels. Based on hostels long provided by organisations such as the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) and YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association), the Māori version helped residents adjust to city life without losing their own culture.
