Story: Household management

This 1946 film shows a young couple searching for a home to rent or buy. Along the way they see an architect, who gives them advice about mortgages. Without sufficient money for a deposit, they finally rent a bedsitter in a house in a run-down area. At the time there was a housing shortage, which dated back to the 1930s and would continue until the 1960s. Efforts to solve the problem included smaller deposits and cheaper, government-funded mortgages, the possibility of capitalising child benefit for the purpose of providing a deposit, and state-house building programmes.
