These graphs, based on census data, show household composition in 1921 and 2006. They show how the average size of households, the percentage with children and the average number of children in a household have all shrunk. In 2006 about three-quarters of New Zealand households were occupied by families. The 1921 census did not include this information, although it noted that a large majority of homes were lived in by single families. In 2006 single-person households were the second-largest (and fastest-growing) category. Increasing numbers of those living alone were elderly, and received assistance with household tasks from family or friends.
