Sharing food is a traditional part of major events in Māori communities. These members of the 28th (Māori) Battalion, returned from the Second World War, are enjoying a feast prepared in a hāngī (earth oven) and served in the whare kai (dining hall) at Kuku Ōhau marae, near Ōtaki, in 1946.
