Religious observance: church event, Auckland

These Filipino girls are performing at a church event in Auckland in the late 1980s. The Philippines flag held by the young girl on the right has an interesting history. It was designed by Emilio Aguinaldo, the Filipino revolutionary leader, during his exile in Hong Kong in the 1890s. The sun depicted on the flag has eight rays representing the first eight provinces that took up arms against the Spanish rulers during the insurrection of the 1890s. The Philippines achieved independence from Spain in 1898 after centuries of colonial rule.
