Scientists aboard the Discovery

The BANZARE (British Australia New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition) ship Discoveryhad a section reserved for scientific work, shown here. Bending over some specimens is New Zealand scientist Robert Falla. The Discoverytravelled along the edge of Antarctica and visited Crozet, Kerguelen, Heard and Macquarie islands in 1929–30. A BANZARE report on birds written by Falla and published in 1937 became a classic.

BANZARE was made up of two voyages or cruises - 1929/30 and 1930/31. On Voyage 1 the Crozets, Kerguelen and Heard Island were visited. In 1930/31 Macquarie Island was one of the places visited. See Talk:British_Australian_and_New_Zealand_Antarctic_Research_Expedition
