Story: Antarctica and New Zealand

French explorer Dumont d'Urville made two attempts to reach Antarctica during his 1837–40 expedition. The first failed when ice, fog and scurvy among the crew forced his ships, the Astrolabeand Zélée, to retreat. His second attempt was successful. D'Urville claimed the Terre Adélie area (named after his wife) for France, and amassed some of the huge collection of scientific specimens he would take back.
