This hand-coloured photograph of George Grey was made in the early 1860s. During his first governorship in New Zealand between 1845 and 1853 Grey supported mission schools through the Education Ordinance 1847, which was based on four principles. These were: religious instruction, industrial training, instruction in the English language and government inspection.
