Story: Te Tiriti o Waitangi – the Treaty of Waitangi

The paddle steamer Koheroa was one of three gunboats to serve on the Waikato River during the Waikato war. This watercolour shows troops disembarking at Pukerimu (Cambridge) in April 1864. The war had begun the previous year with an invasion of Waikato by troops led by Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron. Most Māori, and some Europeans (including several members of Parliament), regarded this action as a breach of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi).
