New Zealand’s African population grew in the 1990s and into the 2000s, largely because people were fleeing war, persecution and political unrest. Migration from Zimbabwe was particularly significant in the 2000s. This graph shows the numbers and origins of African-born people in New Zealand between 1991 and 2023.
