The dining rooms of the ships on which most post-war immigrants came to New Zealand were on a par with high-class restaurants or hotel dining rooms. On the Ruahine passengers were served meals of several courses by waiters – a far cry from the experience of 19th-century immigrants, who had perched on their bunks eating dreary meals they had prepared themselves.
