The French town of Le Quesnoy had been under German occupation since 1914, so when the New Zealanders captured the town in November 1918 they were immediately mobbed by an enthusiastic crowd of locals. The people of Le Quesnoy did not forget their liberators, and the town honoured them with a New Zealand garden, a Rue de Nouvelle Zélande and an Avenue des Néo-Zélandais.
