New Zealand became a full member of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 1973. Representative Paul Gabites (left) is shown here signing on New Zealand's behalf. The OECD's members are wealthier, developed nations. Set up in 1961, in succession to the post-war reconstruction Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC), the OECD supports market economies by providing a forum for discussion of problems. It also provides information, makes policy recommendations and sets standards for goods ranging from chemicals to cucumbers.
