Jawaharlal Nehru (left), the first prime minister of an independent India, appears in this photo with New Zealand Prime Minister Sidney Holland (centre), probably at a Commonwealth prime ministers' conference in London in 1956. Nehru had been one of the most high-profile leaders in the long struggle for Indian independence, working closely with Mohandas 'Mahatma' Gandhi. After independence in 1947, Nehru was a leader of the non-aligned movement, believing that newly emerging nations should not take sides in the Cold War. Holland, in contrast, was a firm believer that New Zealand should be a staunch ally of the UK and the US in their confrontation with communism.
