Hauturu, which means ‘resting place of the winds’, was acquired by the government as a nature reserve in 1894 and the last Ngātiwai family evicted. However Ngātiwai people have a continuing relationship with ‘Little Barrier Island’ as it is known. They have been involved in environmental programmes on the island such as the eradication of the kiore, the Polynesian rat.
