Whanganui Māori and the Moutoa flag

The Pākehā women of Whanganui town were also relieved after the Battle of Moutoa, so they prepared a flag. Of white silk, it was 2.5 metres long and featured a Māori and a European hand clasped in friendship beneath a crown. The flag was presented to the local tribes on the occasion of the unveiling of the Moutoa memorial. In this photo, taken about 1897, local warriors pose beneath the flag.
