In 1868 Tītokowaru emerged as a major leader of Ngāti Ruanui. Frustrated by the gradual loss of tribal land, he successfully attacked a government outpost at Turuturumōkai. In response, government forces attempted to attack Tītokowaru’s pā, Te Ngutu-o-te-manu, near Kaponga. It became a famous fiasco in which many British troops, including Major Gustavus von Tempsky, were killed. This is a newspaper reproduction of a painting by J. McDonald depicting the attack.
