This is so fascinating. I am related to the Laurie's via the Gibbons, and am finding all these histories so interesting. Would love to know more. Kawhia in the 1820s/30s must have been a hive of activity. Seems that Astley came over with Kent and I wonder why? Also so interesting, the Jewish connection.

Hi Murray. I am too from this line and have been information gathering for the past couple of years (what is published via google search). I am interested in what DNA testing you have done to show you the connections. Thanks

Further to discussions above. I have now done my ancestry DNA and results show that we have a connection to Paramount Chief. Potatau Te Wherowhero possible sister Pare te Putu or Pine te Putu and Te Rauparaha of Ngati Toa and his wife Marore. Welcome your DNA links to strengthen this.

Hi Rosemarie and Maurice, iam also on a mission to find out more on the Lauries and Te Rangiatea neice of Te Kihirini-Te Kanawa of Maketu, Kawhia. Would like to make comtact with both of you to find out what you have. Iam currently researching Maori Land Court minute books with the view to get and clearer picture of Te Kihirini Tukeria = pere-taiko Te Kanawa-Ikatu = Rakuruake children: Te Kihirini-Te Kanawa = Rangi-tiaho Pine-te-putu = Titoko Te Kihirini placed Astley laurie aka Tom Smith aka Smith Laurie, aka Tamete at Maketu and gave his neice Te Rangiatea in marriage to 'Tanmete". although i dont no who the daughter is of Te Kanawa-Ikatu I have found that Pine-te Putu married Titoko and also lived at Maketu, Titoko died young, its possible Te Rangiatea could be the daugter of Pare-te-putu & Titoko hence being Te Kihirini's neice Source Otorohanga Minute book No. 5 pages 322,325,326,328 & 332 pg 332 Testomonial Major W. Te Wheoro "Once we were engaged in getting food, we worked at Parengatai growing kumara's and while engaged in that we moved to Maketu. There was a European living there named Laurie, he was put there by Te Kihirini. I asked Te Kihirini who owned the land here and he replied that it used to belong to Te Kanawa, but when his daughter Pine-te-putu married Titoko, Te Kanawa gave it to the latter. When Titoko died, Te Kanawa returned and pre occupied Maketu. Iam from Annie Laure = William Edward Elizabeth Ann Edwards = Edward Henry Gibbs Elizabeth Ann Gibbs = William Samuel Buchanan Look forward to hearing from you Kind regards Murray Kelly
