Muriwai, the sister of Toroa, the captain of the Mataatua canoe, established a rāhui that prohibited the taking of shellfish where her twin sons drowned.

The ban ran from Ngā Kurī a Whārei (Bowentown) to Tihirau (Whangaparāoa). Many of the tribes of this region have an association to the Mataatua, as well to many other ancestral waka that landed here.
