Inscription on memorial

The memorial on the site of the last battle between Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe, which confirmed Ngāi Tahu’s position as the South Island’s paramount tribe, claims that the battle was fought at Waitaramea around 1725, although that date is speculation and cannot be verified.
