Te Uri-o-Hau and Te Taoū of Ngāti Whātua claim that the Māhuhu-ki-te-rangi canoe landed on Tāporapora Island at Kaipara Heads . Rongomai, the captain, was drowned in a fishing accident and his body beaten against rocks by waves. The area became known as Te Ākitanga-o-Rongomai – the beating of Rongomai.
