Story: Housing and government

While the designs of state houses were uniform across New Zealand, there were regional variations in the use of materials. In earthquake-prone Wellington most houses were built of wood, but in more tectonically stable Dunedin brick houses were popular, as shown here in this 1940s photograph of the suburb of Wakari. In North Otago some state houses were even built using local (Ōamaru) stone.
