A family pose outside their house in the Lower Hutt state-housing suburb of Taitā in 1949. The dwelling is actually a double unit (semi-detached), designed to look like a single unit. These were erected to save money. Most tenants vied for a single-unit dwelling because they represented the New Zealand suburban ideal of a stand-alone house on a spacious section, and hence had higher social status than double or multi-unit dwellings.
