These boys attended Cathedral Grammar school, a private Anglican preparatory school in Christchurch (captain Jock Phillips is seated centre, front). The majority of New Zealand children are educated in state schools, which are financed by the government but administered by individual school boards. There are also integrated schools (schools within the state system that maintain their special – often religious – character) and private schools, both of which charge fees.
