The largest single landowner in New Zealand is the Department of Conservation. The ‘conservation estate’ includes national parks, forest parks and reserves. The department has many programmes to help protect New Zealand’s biodiversity. It safeguards native forests and other plant communities, and works to rescue birds and other animals and insects threatened with extinction. Here children listen to one of the department’s officers at the Tongariro National Park visitors’ centre.
