This map from 1924 shows the proportion of Māori to Europeans in North Island hospital districts. Those areas which were remote and difficult to get to had higher concentrations of Māori than more accessible places. The districts with the highest Māori population density were Hokianga and the East Cape, both rural areas; those with the lowest were urban Auckland and Wellington.
