Makereti Hinewai was also the niece and adopted daughter of high ranking chief Rewi Manga Maniapoto. Rewi adopted Makereti as his daughter after the death of his only child Te Kore. On Rewi's death his "mana" and leadership was passed onto Makereti Hinewai who lived in Kihikihi.
