Wiremu Te Maihi Te Rangikāheke from Ngāti Rangiwewehi transcribed a number of oral traditions in his tribe which became widely known. In one reference to creation he wrote: Te Pō, te Pō / Te Ao, te Ao / Te kimihanga, te hahaunga, i te kore, i te kore. (The night, the night / The day, the day / The seeking, the adzing out from the nothing, the nothing.)
