The chair of the New Zealand Māori Council, Sir Graham Latimer (second from left), gives the V-for-victory sign on hearing the result of the council's case against the Crown in June 1987. The Court of Appeal's ruling in what came to be known as the 'Lands' case had a signficant flow-on effect on how the Treaty of Waitangi was intepreted by the courts, and on subsequent settlements of Treaty of Waitangi claims.
