Local Māori at Te Karaka, near Gisborne, wait for Te Kooti to arrive on Sunday 24 February 1889. The wharenui, named Te Poho-o-Pikihoro after a renowned ancestress, was built especially for Te Kooti's visit. Te Kooti was not to arrive, however. He was arrested to prevent him from returning to Poverty Bay and never made it to the meeting house.
