Armed guard, 1906

The men who worked in the Taihape office of the Public Works Department when the main trunk line was being built were wary of the amount of cash they handled when they paid the wages. They worked behind drawn curtains and had a rifle at the ready. The practice of clerks, tellers and bank managers having weapons to hand when they handled large amounts of cash had ceased by the 1960s.
