Shirley Tunnicliffe and Alexis Heagney of the Sisters of Compassion load a portrait of the order's founder, French nun Suzanne Aubert, into a car. The pair were taking the portrait to Wellington's Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, where it was displayed during a mass celebrating the centenary of the Sisters of Compassion in October 1992. Aubert founded the order in 1892 at the small Māori settlement of Jerusalem on the Whanganui River. Jerusalem was later home to another type of intentional community – poet James K. Baxter's 1970s commune, which also aimed to work closely with Māori.
