The number of multiple births is rising slightly, but few schools start the school year with eight sets of twins and one set of triplets. This happened at Waimea Intermediate School in Nelson in February 2005. The principal of the school, Cleve Shearer, said that, while they had often had twins at the school, it was exceptional to have so many enrolling at the same time. While some twins and triplets were in the same class, many of them were in different classes.
