Farm workers dip sheep at Ōrari Gorge Station, around 1899. Regular dipping protected sheep from infestations of scab (a skin-burrowing mite that causes wool to fall off, leaving a greenish scab) and other parasites. A popular dip consisted of glycerine mixed with water. Up to 7,000 sheep could be dipped in one day.
