Divided lives

Divided lives

The sense of a deep division between the experience of men and women during the First World War is expressed in this illustration. Titled ‘somewhere in New Zealand and somewhere in France’, it appeared on the front cover of the Auckland Weekly News in October 1917, and contrasts the harrowing experience of soldiers in the trenches with that of women reading and sewing peacefully at home.
