Story: Farming in the economy

Nelson farmland

Image
Nelson farmland

This idyllic pastoral scene depicts the Nelson settlement in 1842, a year after it was founded. In the foreground men are putting up a fence, while others cart and cut timber for it. In the background a homestead and its gardens are fenced off from the sheep and cattle grazing the nearby hills. This painting was used to promote Nelson to potential settlers.
