Dentistry in the early 2000s was increasingly focused on improving the appearance of teeth, not just treating tooth decay or preserving teeth. New laser technologies, miniaturised cameras and novel tooth-coloured resin and porcelain substances enabled dentists to improve the appearance of teeth, including teeth that are perfectly healthy, but not the colour or shape that patients desire. These services are offered by private companies that specialise in cosmetic dentistry, and include veneers, crowns and tooth implants. Costs of treatments for a whole mouth of teeth ranged from $10,000 to $50,000 in 2010.
