This Salvation Army film from the 1980s shows its long-established treatment centre for ‘inebriates’ (alcoholics) on Rotoroa Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. For many years this small island, which had no other residents, gave problem drinkers a forced break from contact with alcohol. However, they often began drinking again as soon as they returned to the mainland. Later the Salvation Army used more advanced and effective treatment methods. In 2005 it transferred its treatment centre to Auckland city and the island became a nature reserve.
