Mary McGrath, supervisor of the Christchurch City Mission's night shelter, stands by a bunk in 2010. The shelter houses hundreds of residents and non-residents each year and provides thousands of meals. As well as the night shelter, the Christchurch City Mission offers drug and alcohol services, a foodbank, a medical clinic, budgeting advice and other social services.
The building pictured suffered little damage from the devastating September 2010 earthquake and the mission was inundated with requests for emergency shelter and supplies and launched a special nationwide Earthquake Appeal Fund. This building was demolished after being damaged in the February 2011 earthquake. The mission moved into new premises in 2012.
