Story: Medicines and remedies

This medicine chest belonged to surveyor Frederick Tuckett, who brought it with him to New Zealand in 1841. It contains medicinal substances common at the time, such as sal volatile (used as smelling salts to revive people who had fainted) and camphor (used to treat coughs and colds). The drawers hold more bottles and equipment used to prepare medicines, including a pestle, funnel and measuring jug.
