Mayor of Gisborne

Mayor of Gisborne

Meng Foon, the mayor of Gisborne, takes photos of the wreckage following an earthquake which hit the city in December 2007. Meng Foon was born in New Zealand and learnt to speak Māori while working in his parents' market garden alongside Ngāti Porou and Tūranganui-a-Kiwa labourers. He was not the only mayor of Asian ethnicity in 2010. Dunedin's mayor was Peter Chin, a descendant of an early Chinese family in New Zealand. He was the successor in office to Sukhi Turner, who was of Indian background.
