In 2013 Pacific people had a lower than average median income. A low income can affect the health of Pacific families because they have less money to spend on doctors' visits when they fall ill, and may become even sicker before seeking medical treatment. The ethnicity categorisations are self-reported, so where a person nominates two or more ethnicities they appear in several categories. The 'Other' category includes those who stated that they were 'New Zealanders' on the census form.
