Kōpū bridge

Kōpū bridge

Before a new bridge was completed in December 2011, nearly all road traffic between Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula crossed the historic one-lane Kōpū bridge over the Waihou River. It had long been a bottleneck at holiday times, as vacationing Aucklanders sought to either reach the peninsula or leave it. In this cartoon, traffic for the return trip has backed up to Whitianga, 88 kilometres away.
