Whenuakite station protest

Whenuakite station protest

Ngāti Hei spokesperson Joe Davis is shown here in 2007 at the site of an occupation on Whenuakite station in Mercury Bay. The station had been put up for sale by Landcorp, a Crown-owned business, after the agency responsible for Treaty of Waitangi settlements passed it over. The Ngāti Hei tribe has a long history of settlement in the district. A week into the occupation, Landcorp withdrew the station from sale.
