Wiremu and Rāhui Tenetahi were both from the Ngātiwai tribe. The couple opposed the government buying Little Barrier Island (Hauturu) as a refuge for the stitchbird and other native birds. They refused compensation money, and stayed on the island. The sale went ahead, and the family was forcibly moved to Auckland in 1896.
