As ships and wharf cranes became larger, the port of Wellington reclaimed land from the sea to accommodate them. This map shows the gradual reclamation, continuing into the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Thorndon was extended to allow for a container terminal. The 24.3-hectare space can hold 6,284 containers.
