The noticeboard at the entrance to the Wholemeal Café in Tākaka advertises yoga, meditation retreats, dance workshops and HANDS (How About No Dollar System) – a bartering system which allows people to exchange goods or services. In a small community like Tākaka where there are not many jobs, many people are self-employed and have sacrificed higher incomes for relaxing lifestyles.
