Story: Lighthouses

Children’s education could be a problem for lighthouse families, since only a few stations had schools close by. The establishment of the Correspondence School in 1922 went some way to preventing children from having broken, or almost non-existent, schooling. But some women disliked the additional burden it imposed. In this 1958 photograph a keeper’s wife supervises her daughter’s correspondence school lessons at the Cape Palliser lighthouse.
