Rising air currents enable glider pilots to attain great altitudes, as this photograph shows. After flying north from Ōmarama, New Zealand’s famous gliding centre, the pilot looks down on 3,724-metre Aoraki/Mt Cook, the highest peak in the Southern Alps.
